8 Steps To Replacing Bad Habits

MoHow   Posted By:   Dr. MO   About 20 years ago I decided that it was time for me change my life in a purposeful, positive way. I decided to begin by eliminating what I considered to be the bad habits that I had been forming for who knows how long, and replacing them with healthier ones. When I  changed my habits I changed my life.

I became a healthier thinker, began to eat healthier food, and became more physically fit by exercising daily. If you want to make similar changes in your life I have some ideas to share with you to help you eliminate bad habits and develop good ones. Here are eight to start with, I will add more tomorrow.

Commit to changing. Commit at least 30  days to any change. This is the minimum and it is for simple habit changes. Don’t be fooled into believing that all changes will happen in 21 days.

Replace a bad habit with a good one. Habits fulfill needs.  Before you make a change, write down all the benefits you currently get from your bad habit and develop a good habit that satisfies your needs.

One step at a time. Changing habits isn’’t a matter of willpower, it’s about patience and strategy. Don’’t expect to overhaul your diet, exercise or thinking patterns all at once. Target one habit at a time.

Make a plan. Writing down your commitments  will give you clarity both to what you desire and how you intend to do it.

Spread the word. Tell your family, friends, and colleagues about your plan so you will be more likely to follow through with the change.

Keep going.  Most changes are not going to happen easily. It took me three months before I finally stayed  with exercising regularly. Don’’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t achieve your positive habit change the first time round.  Just adjust your approach and keep going

Avoid traps at the beginning. Keep away from places and situations that can trigger your old habit. Remove unhealthy food from your house. Don’’t go to places where everybody is drinking. This isn’’t always possible, but do your best to avoid temptation.

Track your thoughts. When you start to think about giving up, ask yourself what the cost of returning to the old habit is, and answer the question. then ask yourself what the benefit of creating the new habit is, and answer that question. Write down the answers, keep them, and review them.
