How To Regard Mistakes As Temporary Setbacks

MoHow  Posted by Dr. MO    Momentum is usually thought of as something to do with a moving object, something to do with physics and science. And so it’s appropriate that today’s MoHow  relates to quote from Albert Einstein. Here it is:

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Years ago as I was watching a film crew making a movie I realized that there’s an intimate relationship between the word “mistake” and the word “take“. I saw the film crew continue to shoot, and re-shoot, scenes in the movie until someone shouted “It’s a take!” That meant that the scene had been successfully captured.

As I walked away I realized that a way to think about the filming, that I had just witnessed, was that the scenes that needed to be re-done  could be referred to as  “mistakes“, in contrast to a successfully filmed scene being referred to as a “take“.

The “mistakes” were the required steps on the road to the “take“. With each one something was learned and corrected, so the next effort was an improved one.

The lesson for us is to accept that ‘mistakes‘ come with the territory of any initiatives, and that it’s up to us to learn from them, stay the course, maintain momentum in our efforts, and then we will achieve our desired “take“, our goal.
